The right model depends on the number of occupants and intended use:

1-person kayaks: These models are designed for solo trips. They are agile, easy to manoeuvre and have a compact pack size.

2 to 3-person kayaks: These models are suitable for trips for two or several people. They offer greater stability on the water and room for passengers.

Specialist kayaks: Optimised models are available for specific uses, such as fishing. For example, the Aqua Marina Caliber series. These feature a wider design to provide increased tipping stability, which also makes it possible to stand in the boat.

What should you take into account when looking at the maximum load capacity?

The maximum load capacity indicates the total permissible weight that the kayak can safely carry. Depending on the model, this can range from around 100 kg to 260 kg. When choosing a kayak, consider the total weight of all passengers, as well as any additional luggage, provisions, waterproof bags or special accessories, such as fishing equipment.

How stable are inflatable kayaks compared with rigid-hull kayaks?

Modern inflatable kayaks achieve a high level of rigidity thanks to special material technologies, bringing them close to rigid-hull kayaks. High-quality model ranges, such as the Tomahawk AIR series, use the so-called drop stitch process, which features high-density fabric inside. Reinforced materials such as FortiFiber™ or TriTech™ are also used. Under high air pressure, these create a firm, dimensionally stable surface and make the boat more resistant to external influences.

How is the kayak's tracking and straight-line performance ensured?

Inflatable kayaks from manufacturers such as Intex, Bestway and Aqua Marina usually feature removable fins, also known as skegs, on the underside of the hull. These fins stabilise directional control in the water, improve straight-line tracking and make it easier to stay on course in crosswinds or light waves.

How does strong sunlight affect the air pressure?

As air expands when heated, the internal air pressure of an inflatable kayak increases in intense sunlight. If the kayak is left in the sun for a longer period, especially on land and outside the cooling effect of the water, a little air should be released to prevent excessive pressure and possible damage to the welded seams. The air pressure can be adjusted again before returning to the water.

What do kayak sets include?

Many models are sold as sets. The contents vary depending on the product and manufacturer, but often include the following components: adjustable aluminium or combination paddles, an air pump, either a hand or foot pump, seats with backrests, removable fins, a transport backpack and a repair set. How much time do you need for transport and assembly on site?

Inflatable kayaks have a compact pack size. When folded and stored in the transport backpack, they can be carried in the boot of a car. Assembly at the water usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes with the help of multi-chamber systems, high-pressure valves and suitable pumps.

Do you need additional safety equipment?

Wearing a suitable buoyancy aid or life jacket is strongly recommended when using kayaks, regardless of the paddlers' ability. Depending on the region and type of water, such as rivers, coastal waters or federal waterways, local marking or safety regulations may also apply. These should be checked in advance.

How to clean and care for your kayak?

After use, especially in salt water, the kayak should be rinsed with clean fresh water to remove salt and dirt. Before folding and storing it in the transport bag, it must be allowed to air dry completely. This helps prevent mildew, mould and material damage.

How to store kayaks over winter?

For winter storage, the kayak should be cleaned, fully dried and loosely folded. The storage location should be dry, frost-free and protected from direct sunlight, such as a cellar or storage room. Extreme cold and prolonged UV exposure can make the material brittle over time.
