HEISSNER Pond Filters

For biotopes, garden ponds and compact fish ponds

Pond filters play a central role in any garden pond. They ensure clear water, reduce nutrient levels and create stable conditions for plants and fish. The HEISSNER product range includes high-performance pressure and flow-through filters for everything from small ornamental ponds to fish and koi ponds. All filtration systems are designed for continuous outdoor use. They are UV-resistant, frost-proof (when used/stored correctly in winter) and designed to match HEISSNER Pond Pumps.

What does a pond filter do?
A pond filter purifies the water mechanically (by removing debris particles) and supports the biological breakdown of nutrients. The result: clear water, reduced algae growth, and stable water parameters.

How long should a pond filter run?
A pond filter should be operated continuously 24 hours a day throughout the pond season.
This is the only way to keep water parameters stable and filtration performance consistent. During the winter, operation can be reduced or paused, depending on the local climate and the depth of the pond.

How often does a pond filter need to be cleaned?
Depending on the size of the pond, fish population, and the time of year, cleaning is typically recommended every 2–6 weeks.
Maintenance is usually required more frequently during the peak summer months due to higher waste loads, and less often in the spring and autumn.

What types of pond filters are available?

  • Pressure Filters – Compact, closed systems. These offer flexible placement and can even be installed below the water level. Ideal for small to medium-sized ponds.
  • Flow-through Filters – Open filtration systems with a high flow capacity. Particularly suitable for larger ponds or those with higher fish stocks.

What should be considered when choosing a filter?

  • Pond volume and fish population determine the required filter size
  • Filtration capacity should be matched to a suitable pond pump
  • Regular cleaning ensures permanently clear water

For small ornamental ponds, compact pressure filters are often the best space-saving solution. For larger ponds or those with fish, a high-performance flow-through filter with a sufficiently dimensioned pump is recommended to achieve optimum water quality.
