Pool Multitabs: 3 items

Multitabs for easy pool water care

Unlike chlorine tablets, multitabs for pool water care contain not only chlorine and chlorine stabiliser, but also additional active ingredients and functionality. These may include:

  • flocculant
  • algae prevention
  • additionally integrated shock chlorination
  • pH stabiliser, although this is unnecessary with most multitabs

The purpose of a multifunction tablet is to make pool care possible with just one tablet instead of several different products. As the pH value still needs to be adjusted separately, it cannot strictly be described as complete care, despite what is sometimes promised.

How multifunction tablets can differ

It is not only the number of active ingredients that can vary. These tablets can also differ in other ways:

Pool multitabs and chlorine stabiliser

All chlorine multitabs available in our shop use cyanuric acid for stabilisation. This offers three key benefits:

  • no effect on the pH value
  • more even chlorine release
  • the chlorine contained is more resistant to UV rays

Benefits of using stabilisation

Overall, this means that disinfection is more reliable and more consistent. The active ingredients are released gradually over time, which is ideal as it reduces the likelihood of there being no active chlorine available in the pool. In addition, the chlorine stabiliser contained in multitabs helps prevent UV rays from breaking down active chlorine, when bound to cyanuric acid, too quickly. This reduces chlorine consumption and also makes pool care easier, as the disinfectant remains available in the pool more evenly.

Important: there are also disadvantages

Cyanuric acid does not break down in pool water. Its buffering effect is desirable up to a certain point. However, if there is too much cyanuric acid in the pool, too much buffering takes place and the chlorine multitabs are no longer strong enough for effective disinfection. Under normal circumstances, this point would be reached after one and a half to two seasons. The cyanuric acid level can be measured. Ideally, it should be between 8 and 25 ppm. The cyanuric acid level can only be reduced in two ways:

  • adding fresh water
  • partially or fully draining the existing pool water

As above ground pools are usually refilled with fresh pool water every year, this issue is not particularly relevant in practice in 98% of cases. However, in 2% of cases, an elevated cyanuric acid level can become a problem, usually because far too much chlorine has been used and, as a result, too much stabiliser has entered the pool water.

Multifunction tablets: with or without flocculation?

There are different products among multitabs. Some promote a clarifying effect through flocculant. Thanks to flocculation, pool care can definitely become more effective, as sand filter systems can then filter out very small particles and clouding agents that would otherwise pass straight through the filter tank and end up back in the pool water.

  • Several factors must be considered when using flocculation:
  • flocculants only work with sand and filter glass. With Filter Balls and filter cartridges, however, problems may occur
  • the flocculation effect of the corresponding multitabs, like chlorine, only works effectively at a pH value between 6.8 and 7.4

Nothing beats flocculation, where possible

Pool multitabs with flocculant are a great option for more comprehensive pool care. As fewer particles remain in the pool water and, in the same way, more impurities are removed when backwashing the sand filter system, the effectiveness of the chlorine increases.

Comparing Steinbach pool multitabs

Our range includes various pool chemicals, including multitabs by Steinbach designed to help make pool care and pool cleaning easier. How do they help keep the water clear and hygienic? Both the so-called Quattrotabs and the Total Blue tabs have the following in common:

  • chlorine with stabiliser, which combats organic clouding agents, unwanted chloramines, bacteria, viruses, fungi and algae through oxidation
  • pH neutral
  • integrated algaecide, which does not work through oxidation, but by disrupting algae metabolism

However, there are also differences. Let us compare them now.

Total Blue Multitabs

For smaller and medium sized pools that use pumps with cartridge filters or Filter Balls.

  • 20 g tablets are easy to dose for small pool volumes
  • dissolving time between 3 and 8 days
  • also fit into small dosing floats
  • do not contain flocculant, making them compatible with Filter Balls and cartridge filters

These tabs are available in 1 kg and 5 kg packs. If your pool is smaller than 6 to 7 m³, the 1 kg pack is generally more than sufficient for the entire season.

Quattrotabs

These chlorine multitabs are suitable for larger pools with sand filter systems.

  • 200 g tablets are ideal for dosing pools with a volume of 15 m³ or more
  • integrated flocculant for crystal clear water
  • only fit into large dosing floats
  • not compatible with filter cartridges or Filter Balls

Quattrotabs are available in 1 kg or 5 kg packs. The tablets can be broken for more precise dosing.

Chlorine multitabs: tips for crystal clear water

Hygienically clean, crystal clear water is essential for enjoyable swimming. Pool chemicals are an important part of complete pool care, but they are only one part of it. Follow these pool care tips and you will achieve the best results when using chlorine multitabs.

The pH value is extremely important

Unfortunately, the pH value is often not given the attention it deserves. This can have serious consequences, as disinfectants only work within a specific range. Measure and adjust the pH value regularly to ensure the full effect of your chlorine multitabs.

Use a dark solar cover or pool cover

Covering the pool can reduce the amount of dirt entering the water while also ensuring that fewer UV rays reach the water. The chlorine in the multitabs works more effectively when UV exposure is reduced, and less dirt also means less work for the multitabs. This measure also helps limit algae growth, as less light means less photosynthesis and therefore less growth. If there is less algae in the pool, the demand for chlorine decreases. A positive cycle in every sense.
